CURRENT PROJECT: Using Media to Regulate Anxiety
Healthy adults use media to manage and repair mood. This project is a secondary analysis for which I am using a subset (N ~ 8,200) of a national dataset to investigate the relationship between anxiety and media selection and use. I hypothesize that anxious persons will watch more anxiety and suspense-laden video media than controls. Due to variations in trauma symptoms (re-experiencing, avoidance, hyperarousal) I also expect to be able to identify an avoidant/anxious cluster who refrain from using anxiety-laden media. This avoidant subgroup will differ from those who seek anxious/suspenseful media on factors (e.g. increased age, treatment history, higher SES, more education, lower levels of anxiety) believed to be linked to increased positive coping and reduced use of primitive defense mechanisms.
